Composers: Hear Us! We Are Women. We Have Voices Too.
"Their passion for the music they presented shined through in their performance, and I wholeheartedly recommend them to any school or music organization."
- Stephen Buck, Boston City Singers
Hear Us! is a concert/lecture series featuring the power of live music through the experiences and music of women composers. This Spring Julia presented Hear Us! at three educational venues in Boston, through New England Conservatory and Club Passim Iguana Grants, with the goal that each audience member would be immersed in beautiful song, educated about classical music, enlightened about the struggles and accomplishments of women in music, and inspired to celebrate these women composers and perhaps to push themselves to make a mark in our world.
Hear Us! stems from Julia's original American Women Composer (AWC) concert/lecture series presented last Spring at three venues in Boston. This Spring she focused on educational venues, and created programs for children/young adults ages 5-18.
The program can be adapted to different length workshops, generally 30-90 minutes. Throughout the experience there is active participation, questioning, and examining. Her collaborator for the past two years (her freshman roommate at NEC), Lingbo Ma, is a composer and pianist who will be attending Juilliard for her graduate studies. Last year Julia commissioned Ms. Ma to write a piece specifically for Hear Us! in Mandarin with a chorus part for the students to learn in the workshop. The program concludes with a discussion and Q&A geared toward exploring the importance of the female viewpoint and experience.
Hear Us! creates a welcoming door into the world of classical music.
In past performances Hear Us! has included original folk/pop music and pieces from the musical theatre genre. The program can be adapted as desired. If you are interested in bringing Hear Us! to a location near you, please contact Julia.
"They engaged my young students in dialogue about music, female composers, and music history. When I warned them some of my students might be too young to sit through a traditional recital, Julia jumped at the opportunity to make their presentation interactive and fun. My students were talking about their recital for weeks and are still asking me when Julia and Lingbo can return. I would highly recommend the Hear Us! series for any school and I hope I can have them back some day at St. Rose School."
- Elena Snow, St. Rose School
